Whitening products only change the color of natural enamel, which means that any restoration already in your smile will likely stay exactly the shade it was the day it was placed.

Why Whitening Does Not Change Restorations
Whitening gels rely on a bleaching agent that works its way into the enamel of a natural tooth and breaks apart the compounds that are causing the discoloration in the first place. Porcelain, composite resin, and the ceramic used in crowns are manufactured materials that do not respond to that same reaction. The American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy resource confirms this directly, noting that whitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns, or fillings.
That difference is most noticeable on a veneer or crown near the front of your smile. If your natural teeth lighten a few shades and the restoration next to them does not, that gap can become obvious in photos or under bright light. Composite bonding behaves a little differently because it can pick up a bit of surface polish, but it will not lighten to match brand new whitening results the same way that enamel does.
Planning Ahead Before You Whiten
The good news is that this is really more of a planning issue than a reason to skip whitening altogether. Most patients who want a brighter smile and also have porcelain veneers or crowns still have plenty of options once we know where those restorations sit within the smile.
If Your Restorations Are Not Highly Visible
Whitening natural teeth can still be worthwhile if the restorations in question are on back teeth or otherwise out of your smile line. In that case, brightening the visible enamel can make a noticeable difference without creating a mismatch that anyone is likely to notice.
If You Plan to Replace an Older Restoration
If a veneer or crown is due for an update anyway, whitening first often makes sense. That way, the new restoration can be shade matched to your brighter, post-whitening smile rather than the other way around, which tends to give a more natural-looking result overall.
