What can Bioclear do?

Bioclear revitalizes your smile through the reshaping of uneven or small teeth, repairing chips and breaks, addressing gaps, and more.

  • Fill in the triangle-shaped gaps (black triangles) created by receding gumlines

  • Fix chips or breaks without replacements or crowns, leaving as much of the underlying tooth structure as possible

  • Repair small or misshapen teeth to create an even smile

  • Cover stained or discolored teeth to create a long lasting, natural looking smile

What is Bioclear?

The Bioclear Method represents an innovative approach to cosmetic and restorative dentistry, serving as an alternative to traditional fillings, bonding, or veneers. Originating in 2007 through the pioneering work of Dr. David Clark, Bioclear offers enhanced durability compared to traditional composites, porcelain, or amalgams, while also achieving a more aesthetically pleasing and consistent appearance.

This method is characterized by its minimally invasive nature, allowing dentists to preserve more natural tooth structure and enamel than conventional techniques. Most procedures can be completed in a single appointment.

Bioclear involves the use of thin, clear, anatomic tooth forms, known as matrices, which are carefully fitted around the targeted tooth for repair. These forms are then filled with heated composite resins, enabling the composite to flow seamlessly around all aspects of the tooth. Once in position, the composite is solidified (cured) with light. Following this, the matrix is removed, and the structure is polished, resulting in a remarkably robust, finished tooth that both looks and feels natural.

Common questions about Bioclear answered for you…

What sets Bioclear apart from composite fillings, bonding, or veneers?
Conventional composite fillings and bonding resins are applied as pastes, layered onto the tooth. To ensure adhesion between layers, dentists often need to grind down the tooth to create space for the final restoration. Unfortunately, these layered applications result in noticeable ridges at the junction of the restoration and the enamel. Additionally, when the filling or bonding material eventually cracks, chips, or wears down, it compromises the structural integrity of the original tooth, leaving little support.

Bioclear, on the other hand, adopts a more conservative approach, preserving a greater extent of your natural tooth structure during the process. The Bioclear composites, while boasting enhanced strength and durability compared to alternative materials, exhibit a wear pattern similar to that of your natural teeth. In case of an accident, a damaged Bioclear restoration can typically be repaired or replaced.

Regarding porcelain veneers, these are cosmetic coverings applied to mask imperfections in your teeth, aiming for an aesthetic enhancement. While they can achieve a pleasing appearance and offer considerable strength, they are susceptible to staining, with the edges being particularly noticeable as the original tooth enamel is exposed. Importantly, veneers do not address the structural aspects of your teeth; their primary function is for cosmetic enhancement.

Bioclear, on the contrary, reinforces the strength of your teeth without causing damage. The procedure is swift, with easy touch-up options, and it shares a similar level of reversibility as veneers.
What is the lifespan of a Bioclear restoration in comparison to that of a crown?
A more pertinent question is: between a crown and a Bioclear restoration, which option is more likely to preserve my tooth for the longest period? The answer lies in favor of the Bioclear restoration. Opting for Bioclear offers the optimal chance of retaining your natural tooth for a lifetime.

Traditional crown procedures typically involve removing approximately 75% of the tooth. In contrast, the Bioclear Method minimizes the reduction of tooth structure, thereby decreasing the likelihood of future issues like root canals or fractures. As individuals age, crowned teeth often necessitate extraction, making Bioclear a forward-thinking alternative to circumvent this outcome.

Furthermore, a Bioclear restoration mimics the wear pattern of natural tooth enamel. The Bioclear Clinic stands behind the durability of its restorations, offering a 5-year warranty covering chipping and staining. With regular dental maintenance, it is anticipated that Bioclear restorations will surpass the longevity suggested by standard insurance replacement guidelines.
Is it possible for tooth decay to develop beneath a Bioclear restoration?
In theory, it is possible, but highly improbable. Bioclear, unlike traditional crowns, eliminates gaps, providing a protective shield against decay for your tooth. Crowns, in contrast, can be susceptible to decay or dislodgment over time due to the degradation of the adhesive. Those who have undergone such experiences are familiar with the alarming and disruptive nature of these issues.
Is there a likelihood that my teeth will appear or feel bulky?
Bioclear follows an additive approach. For some individuals, there might be an initial adjustment period as their teeth regain a more youthful volume. Unlike traditional dental methods that involve reducing your natural tooth structure to accommodate crowns, veneers, or fillings— which can provide a result that feels similar to your original tooth—Bioclear restoration surrounds the tooth. During this process, there may be a temporary sensation of slightly increased thickness in the teeth. Nevertheless, patients frequently note that their teeth feel smoother and stronger with Bioclear. The aesthetic outcome is often described as fantastic.
Is there a tendency for Bioclear restorations to become stained?
Bioclear restorations exhibit a high level of resistance to staining. However, akin to natural enamel, they may still undergo staining, albeit in a manner that resembles the rest of your teeth. Persistent smoking or heavy intake of dark substances like coffee or juice can potentially cause permanent staining on both natural tooth enamel and Bioclear restorations. It is advised to drink water and brush your teeth after such consumption, or ideally, refrain from these habits. In the event of surface stains, routine dental cleanings usually allow for effective polishing to remove them.
What is the proper maintenance for Bioclear?
Bioclear restorations, with their smooth and seamless design, are simpler to maintain in a bacteria-free condition compared to crowns or veneers.

Consistent oral hygiene practices such as regular brushing and flossing are essential. Additionally, routine dental exams and cleanings are recommended. Our hygienists are highly skilled in cleaning Bioclear restorations.
How does the Bioclear Method differ from the Bioclear Matrix?
The term "Bioclear" encompasses both a methodology and the associated tools and materials. Dr. Clark is credited as the innovator behind both the Bioclear Matrix and the Bioclear Method.

While matrices have been part of dentistry, the Bioclear Matrix stands out as the sole design resembling a natural tooth, reducing the need for extensive sanding and polishing. This not only enhances the patient experience but also yields superior results.

The Bioclear Method is accessible to any dentist proficient in restorations, with a dedicated Bioclear Learning Center in Tacoma, Washington. Dentists can attain certification in various specific applications. Notably, mastering the Bioclear Method involves a learning curve, drawing on principles of structural engineering and cutting-edge materials science in addition to conventional dental tools and techniques.
