Scaling and Root Planing in Charlotte, NC

Hardened plaque, or calculus, cannot be removed by regular brushing and flossing. If left untreated, it can cause swollen gums, which are an early sign of periodontal disease. Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) is a non-surgical procedure that helps in treating early to moderate periodontal issues.
Scaling and Root Planing is recommended when you are at an early to moderate stage of periodontitis. If you notice swollen gums and/or bleeding while brushing or flossing, there is an increased chance that you have a periodontal issue. One of the main causes of periodontal disease is improper oral hygiene, i.e. not flossing daily and not brushing at least twice a day. Seeing your dentist at least twice a year is also necessary to maintain a healthy smile.
During your initial visit we will evaluate your periodontal health by probing around each tooth. Prove measurements of 4mm or higher of between the gum and the bone indicate a periodontal issue. Given other considerations like recession — shrinking of the gums around the roots of the teeth — we will determine if SRP is the necessary treatment for you. If so, you will be anesthetized for your own comfort, and the calculus as well as bacterial biofilm will be removed below the gum line. After the initial therapy we will reevaluate and fine-tune the cleaning, flowed by closer intervals of Periodontal Maintenance, until we achieve a stable healthy mouth. Visits can then be scheduled for twice a year, as normal. The success of SRP will be dependent on your home care after the initial treatment.
