Bone Grafting in Charlotte, NC
Imagine Dentistry
Tooth extractions can sometimes lead to the need for a bone graft. An extraction is sometimes necessary due to extensive decay or a fracture in the tooth that causes the tooth to be non-restorable. After an extraction, bone healing is resorptive, typically leaving a defect or an irregular shape of both the hard and soft tissue. If teeth are extracted in an area where you would like to place an implant or a fixed bridge, or it is in an area where a defect can hinder esthetics, a bone graft is recommended as a treatment.
The bone will be grafted at the time of extraction if there is no active infection. The bone will be packed into the socket and a membrane will be placed to prevent the grafting material from extruding. Sutures will be used to hold the membrane in place. If placing an implant, the site will be evaluated after 4 to 6 months to make sure that it is stable enough to hold an implant.
