What Is Bioclear and How Does It Work?

Bioclear represents a significant advancement in cosmetic and restorative dentistry, and it was developed in 2007 by Dr. David Clark. Unlike traditional methods that often require extensive removal of healthy tooth structure, Bioclear uses clear anatomic matrices (forms) that are placed around the tooth being treated. Heated composite resin is then injected into these forms, flowing seamlessly around all aspects of the tooth.

The Bioclear process creates a monolithic (one-piece) restoration that eliminates the weaknesses associated with traditional layered (multi-piece) composite resins. After the resin is cured with light, the matrix is removed, and the restoration is polished to create a smooth, natural-looking result. This technique requires significantly less reduction of healthy tooth structure compared to traditional methods, and most procedures are completed in just one appointment.

What Bioclear Can Address

Bioclear offers solutions for numerous dental concerns, providing both esthetic and functional improvements:

  • Eliminating black triangles caused by receding gums or tooth shape
  • Repairing chipped or broken teeth without the need for crowns
  • Reshaping and augmenting small or misshapen teeth for a more balanced smile
  • Closing gaps between teeth without orthodontics
  • Covering stained or discolored teeth with a natural-looking solution

This versatile dental treatment preserves more of your natural tooth structure than veneers or crowns while providing stronger, more durable results than traditional bonding. The Bioclear method delivers a seamless restoration that is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Black Triangle Elimination with Bioclear

One of the most common concerns patients seek Bioclear treatment for is the elimination of “black triangles“—those dark, triangular spaces that can form between teeth near the gumline. These spaces often result from gum recession, periodontal disease, or simply the natural triangular shape (or bell shape) of teeth.

Traditional bonding techniques can be challenging to apply in these areas, often resulting in visible lines or staining over time. The Bioclear method excels at addressing black triangles by:

  • Creating seamless transitions between the restoration and the natural tooth
  • Providing superior adaptation to the tooth and gum contours
  • Forming smooth surfaces that resist staining and plaque accumulation
  • Delivering natural-looking results that blend perfectly with surrounding teeth

As one of the few Bioclear-certified providers in North Carolina, Dr. Coambs regularly treats patients who travel specifically for her expertise in black triangle elimination. The procedure is typically completed in a single visit with minimal discomfort and immediate results.

Why Choose Bioclear Over Traditional Methods?

When comparing dental restoration options, Bioclear offers several distinct advantages over traditional approaches like composite bonding, fillings, and porcelain veneers.

Bioclear vs. Bonding and Fillings

Traditional composite fillings and cosmetic bonding are often applied in layers. Esthetically, these layered applications may result in visible lines where the restoration meets the natural tooth enamel or the layers meet each other. When these restorations eventually wear down or chip, they can compromise the underlying tooth structure.

Bioclear techniques take a more conservative approach by preserving more of your natural tooth. First, the biofilm is carefully removed from the tooth to get an ultraclean surface for the resin to adhere. Then, the heated composite resin flows around the entire tooth, creating a stronger, more durable restoration without visible seams. Bioclear composites wear similarly to natural teeth and can be easily repaired if damaged.

Bioclear vs. Porcelain Veneers

While porcelain veneers can create beautiful aesthetic results, they may require removing up to 70% of the natural tooth enamel. This irreversible process can potentially weaken the tooth over time. Veneers may show visible edges as the original tooth enamel is exposed, and they primarily address cosmetic rather than structural concerns.

Bioclear strengthens your teeth without causing damage to healthy tooth structure. The procedure is efficient and easily adjustable. For many patients, Bioclear presents an ideal middle ground—more durable than traditional bonding but less invasive than veneers or dental crowns.

Additionally, Bioclear can do a beautiful job of closing black triangles seamlessly, in an “additive” fashion (without compromising your natural teeth). Veneers are not able to achieve this result unless we do “subtractive” dentistry (part of the tooth is trimmed/removed and reshaped).

The Bioclear Procedure: What to Expect

The Bioclear treatment process is straightforward and typically completed in a single visit:

  1. Initial examination and treatment planning
  2. Thorough cleaning of the tooth surfaces to remove the biofilm
  3. Placement of the Bioclear matrices around the teeth
  4. Application of a heated composite resin that flows into the matrices and around the tooth
  5. Light curing to harden the composite
  6. Removal of the matrices
  7. Polishing for a smooth, natural finish

Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure, and there is minimal recovery time needed. You can immediately enjoy your new smile with full function right after your appointment.

Ideal Candidates for Bioclear Treatment

Bioclear is suitable for addressing a wide range of dental concerns, but like any treatment, it may not be ideal for everyone. Good candidates for Bioclear treatment generally include:

  • Patients with black triangles between teeth
  • Those with undersized front teeth, chips, gaps, or uneven tooth shapes
  • People seeking a more conservative alternative to veneers or crowns
  • Individuals with good  oral health and a good dental care routine at home
  • Those looking for a single-visit solution

During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your specific situation to determine if Bioclear is the right option for your needs. In some cases, we may recommend alternative treatments like Invisalign for alignment of your teeth or closure of gaps, or crowns for severely damaged teeth.

Maintaining Your Bioclear Restorations

Bioclear restorations are designed for longevity but do require proper care to maintain their appearance and function. With their smooth, seamless design, Bioclear restorations are actually easier to keep bacteria-free than crowns or veneers.

To ensure the longest life for your Bioclear restorations:

  • Maintain consistent oral hygiene habits at home, with regular brushing and flossing
  • Attend routine dental examination and cleaning appointments at your dental office
  • Consider using a nightguard appliance if you have a habit of grinding your teeth
  • Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite hard objects!

While Bioclear restorations are highly stain-resistant, they can still stain similarly to natural teeth with persistent exposure to coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco products. Professional dental cleanings can help remove surface stains and maintain the brilliance of your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bioclear

How much does Bioclear cost?

Bioclear treatment plans are customized to each patient's needs, with costs reflecting the extent of treatment required. At our practice, single-tooth treatments start at approximately $800-1500, while larger smile enhancements may range from $4,000-$10,000+. This represents a significant value compared to traditional veneers or crowns, which often cost considerably more. During your consultation, we'll provide a detailed estimate based on your specific needs. We offer various payment options to help make treatment accessible for our patients.

Is Bioclear covered by insurance?

No, Bioclear is not covered by insurance. Our team can help guide you through financing options at your request. Despite being a conservative, health-focused (not disease-focused) dental treatment option, insurance companies have yet to cover costs associated with Bioclear.

Is it possible for tooth decay to develop beneath a Bioclear restoration?

In theory, it is possible, but highly improbable. Bioclear, unlike traditional crowns, eliminates gaps, providing a protective shield against decay for your tooth. Crowns, in contrast, can be susceptible to decay or dislodgment over time due to the degradation of the adhesive. Those who have undergone such experiences are familiar with the alarming and disruptive nature of these issues.

What are the pros and cons of Bioclear?

In Dr. Coambs’ clinical experience, the most significant advantage of Bioclear is its balance of esthetics, durability, and tooth preservation. While no dental restoration is perfect for every situation, Bioclear fills an important gap between simple bonding and more extensive options like veneers and crowns. For the right candidates, it provides remarkable results with minimal compromise.

Pros:

  • Preserves more natural tooth structure than veneers or crowns
  • Completed in a single visit in most cases
  • More durable than traditional bonding
  • Natural-looking results that blend seamlessly with existing teeth
  • Easily repairable if damaged
  • More affordable than porcelain veneers in most cases
  • Excellent solution for black triangles and small gaps

Cons:

  • May not be suitable for severely damaged teeth or extreme misalignment
  • Not as stain-resistant as porcelain (though more resistant than traditional bonding)
  • Requires proper maintenance for optimal longevity
  • May not be ideal for patients with severe grinding habits without additional protection

How long does Bioclear last on teeth?

Bioclear restorations are designed for longevity with proper care. The lifespan depends on maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular dental cleanings, and avoiding habits like teeth grinding or using teeth to open packages. For optimal longevity, a custom night guard may be recommended if you experience nighttime clenching or grinding.

Can you drink coffee with Bioclear?

Bioclear restorations are more stain-resistant than traditional bonding but not completely immune to discoloration. You can continue to enjoy coffee and other beverages, but moderation and good habits help maintain their appearance. Simple practices like using a straw when drinking staining beverages, rinsing with water afterward, and attending regular hygiene appointments for professional polishing can help keep your Bioclear restorations looking their best for years.

Bioclear Matrix Certified Provider

As your dentist, my goal is to help you establish optimal dental health and the confident, fantastic smile that you deserve!

I believe that Bioclear techniques are an amazing way to conservatively restore worn teeth, as well as restore and fill “black triangle” spaces near the gumline! The results speak for themselves, and patients are very happy to preserve more of their natural teeth, while still solving the dental problem at hand. I pursued the training and certification at the Bioclear Learning Center near Seattle, and I am so glad I did. I love being able to offer Bioclear restorations to my patients as an alternative to veneers or crowns. In multiple cases, it is the better option!

As Connie Stevens once famously said. “Nothing you wear is more important than your smile.”

We believe that wholeheartedly, and we look forward to meeting you soon at Imagine Dentistry!
