Routine dental checkups are extremely important to maintain your oral health. You should visit your dentist for periodic exams at least twice a year and in some cases at shorter intervals, depending on your specific oral care needs. A regular dental checkup, or a hygiene appointment, has two parts: first, the hygienist cleans your teeth and performs an oral prophylaxis, and, second, the dentist performs a check-up. If you are due for x-rays, normally done once a year, they will be taken at this visit. Your gums will be probed at this visit to check for bone loss and gingival inflammation. An extra-oral and intra-oral cancer screening will also be done to check for lumps and bumps along with any pathologies in the oral cavity.
